Ss-Gb Imdb -Katharina Karoline Schuch Color: Color.
Widowed detective Douglas Archer tries to be impartial and is accused of being a collaborator by his mistress and secretary Sylvia, a member of the Resistance.
Douglas is called to investigate the murder of antique shop owner Peter Thomas, who has gunshot wounds but seemingly died of liver failure. Furthermore his shop was a Resistance safe house and he had recently visited a top secret airfield.
The killer would seem to be Peter's brother Spode but Douglas is S1, Ep2. Douglas learns that Spode is part of the Resistance movement and foils an attempt to make him join by threatening to kidnap his son Douggie but is horrified by the SS's brutal behaviour at Douggie's school.
He also finds out that Sylvia colluded with Spode but helps her to escape from the suspicious Kellerman, who shows him a film suggesting that Barbara has enlisted American help to defeat the Germans.
Accepting an invitation to a party thrown by art expert Sydney Garin, Douglas again encounters Barbara, but is also wooed over a secret card game by a group of S1, Ep3.
After the murder of policeman Jimmy Dunn by the Resistance, Harry accuses Douglas of provoking the movement by working for Kellermann and Douglas, having failed to save Sylvia from being arrested, later kills an attacker.
Sam Riley channels John Hurt as Superintendent Archer investigating crimes while dealing with his Nazi bosses and also mixed up with the British resistance.
There were a few good money shots like Big Ben draped with the Nazi flag but alas it looked cheap, with too many interior shots with people talking and talking and more talking.
It had bleached out colours when it should had been colourful. It should had a stronger plot and more action.
The ratings fell of a cliff which just about sums it up. Just preposterous and stupid! I gave this bilge water 15 minutes of my time and then gave up, so this is NOT a fair review In the opening scene after the introductory credits play out we see a couple in a Nazi-occupied hotel.
It's made painfully clear to the viewer that they are not supposed to be there. So what does the girl do? This bright spark thinks it's a good idea to wrap her body with a Nazi flag, throw open the balcony doors of the hotel room and gaze out over occupied London for all the world to see.
After that, she parades around the bedroom dressed only in the flag. Not offensive at least, to me just mind-blowingly ridiculous.
It's safe to say that this doctor has seen just a bit too much action to make him THIS blase about his work! But even that stupidity isn't the biggest crime in this asinine BBC train-wreck Now, I'm an old English man so you'd think that would have given me an advantage, but it didn't.
It seems that in the new world order of Nazi-occupied England, mumbling and indistinct dialog has been written into the new civilian standing orders!
Read Len Deighton's book. It's a lot different I read the book when it was first released and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sadly this rubbish is not remotely enjoyable.
The characters in this TV drama are so dull compared to the characters in the book.. Superintendent Archer of the yard looks like a teenager with his miracle suit and overcoat that always looks cool even when crawling though a bombed out house.
Then back in action with his hat and collar at the right jaunty angle. He has the personality of a pencil. Kellerman seems about as menacing as Sooty and only Huth captures the complexity of the character in the book.
His is the only one worth screen time. Barca is a bore and even Harry who is a pivotal character in the book seems just another supporting cast to Archer and his hat and coat.
He must be the best dressed man in Britain as everyone else looks shabby by comparison. Mumbling his way around London entangling himself in the Labyrinthine politics of the German Army, SS and the Resistance who are some posh blokes in a club who dress nicely but are left in awe of Archer's hat and coat.
I will keep watching to see if the hat and coat suffer any degradation as they solve the mystery and confound the Nazi. I don't really know what I'm giving 3 for: probably for effort, certainly not for atmosphere or Sam Riley.
Riley played a similar part in another mini-series recently, and some casting fool obviously thought his heavy-breathing voice and one- dimensional "look" made him the obvious choice for another leading man role.
He's the worst thing about this tedious rubbish: the role calls for an actor with some charisma, and Riley has the same amount of that as he has screen presence - none.
Thank the Lord for a second series of that instead of this dreary nonsense. Len Deighton must be spinning about in his wooden box. I have read the book about 10 times,I am a fan of the writer,Len Deighton,he is a World War 2 nut and obsessed by detail, which seems to be unpopular nowadays.
I admit it was a difficult first episode, the plot is not clear at the moment but I hope people will stick with it,I am sure it will grow on us.
If people are expecting a fast paced thriller they will be disappointed but I think it will turn out to be a quality production. No plot spoilers but Deighton is a World War 2 expert who has upset some people by pointing out facts from that some people want to ignore or forget.
I did not have any problem with the so called mumbling,I would have liked more pace but I really don't understand why people are being so negative about this production.
How on earth is this such a boring 'drama'?! The writers had the irresistible backdrop of Nazi-occupied London and licence to create any related storyline that they could conjure.
So how have we ended up with this dried up, bumbling series of uninteresting scenes? I cannot be alone on not giving a monkey's about what is happening.
Nothing is remotely 'dramatic' about any of it - not even accidentally. It's embarrassing. Starting with "Winter" and moving through to "Spy Sinker",Archer pere et fils have occupied a lot of the author's time.
These are tales of betrayal, loyalty, familial relationships and, somewhere in the mix, espionage. They are of course imaginative stories but no one could call them fantasies.
To market this new TV series as a "Parallel Universe" tale is a huge mistake as it will not meet from approval of Fantasy fans nor will it satisfy lovers of mystery stories.
As an average Sunday night TV show it is adequate,if derivative. I almost expected Orson Welles to appear spotlit in a doorway.
And a voice-over to say "Meanwhile, over at the cafe Rene The BBC's preoccupation with sexing up existing material is exhibited as you might have expected and adds nothing of advantage to the original narrative.
The fashion for s retro alone will ensure it draws reasonable figures, but it lacks the tightness and verisimilitude of the original. Mr Deighton has been on record for years as refusing to allow movie production of his masterpiece "Bomber" once available as a taped book from a BBC radio broadcast and well worth seeking out.
I hope he can resist any future blandishments from the BBC to present it as a clumsy mish - mash with vague references to the original - like they have done to "SS - GB".
Comic book Germans and stoical Brits might have been OK in but we have come on a bit since then - or so I would have hoped.
This is a really good drama series. Some say it's not as good as the book, but it's rare that ANY adaptation is. For me, especially given it's a BBC adaptation and only five episodes long, it's pretty good.
Oskar Huth are the two most outstanding actors - and characters. Like Archer's sergeant, Harry Woods played by the always wonderful James Cosmo , I've always believed that anyone who works with the enemy IS the enemy.
However, Archer's stance of just trying to keep the peace and bide his time to make a contribution to the effort to overthrow the Nazis, made me realise that mine and Harry's way of black and white thinking is not so easy once out there in the real world.
So, it could be argued, Archer's declaration that any such outright hostile action only gives the Nazis the excuse to round up anyone they consider a threat, and to install Marshal Law, is proved to be true.
His assertion that all the resistant fighters are merely doing is playing directly into the Nazis waiting hands, proves to be sadly correct.
It would seem his own sly and soft approach saves lives even as it undermines the occupiers aggression, and therefore is the way to go - if you want to defeat them without too much innocent collateral damage.
Given the way many British people feel completely 'swamped' by the EU slow undermining of British home rule, and the subsequent vote for Brexit to rid our country of it - it's clear to see that, even now, European control of the UK under any guise is very divisive and very likely to provoke a violent reaction.
Season 2 is already being written and goes into production later this year. Nine of these are devoted to fictional programming, another four to factual, and six are in combined fields.
Eon Productions still has much to consider This feature contains spoilers for Spectre. It was announced this week that James Bond Will Return in November , for the 25th movie in the series.
After the box office reception and subsequent backlash against the previous film, 's Spectre , there has been much speculation about the next film taking on a radically different approach, from casting to storytelling.
Despite Craig's much repeated quote about slashing his wrists rather than returning, which the actor has since put down to being overtired by the junket schedule, it certainly looks like he's coming back for one last go.
The Kid Who Would Be King might, at first glance, seem like yet another genre film that transplants ancient lore into a modern setting, centering the drama on a less-than-prepared average protagonist.

Being as the plot revolves around ten characters involved in a one hour plus shoot-out inside a disused factory, from a sartorial point of view things get rather grubby.
Free Fire unfolds practically in real time, which amps up the tension but allows for no mistake with costume. Stains and bullet holes, all need to remain in exactly the same place, no matter how many takes are required.
We caught up with Emma Fryer to discuss her work on Free Fire , and specifically where she found so many vintage multiples.
